“No matter what the purpose is, whether in our mind it is big or small, it is important to God. It is why we are each created with the gifts and talents that we have been given.” p. 46

Have you ever wondered if you’re making any contribution at all to the world?  Ever wondered what your legacy will be – or even if you will leave one at all?  In Get Real – Stop Hiding Behind the Mask, Jamy Whitaker explores the issues that leave us with an inability to be our real selves, an inability to discover and then fulfill the plans and purpose God has pre-ordained for each one of us!

The book is broken down into 3 parts: Identity, Insecurities and Perspective, covering the foundation of why we wear masks, and how we can move forward without them.  Discussing our Identity, Ms Whitaker chooses 9 adjectives – with Scriptural “back up” – that lay the groundwork of who we are as a saved individual.  Elaborating on characteristics such as “set free”, “accepted”, “made new” and “victorious”, she goes on to explain how incorporating this knowledge into our lives can begin to give us the courage to peel away our masks.  Reassuringly, she reminds us that “The issue with most people today is not that they do not love God.  It is that they cannot begin to imagine how much He loves all of them.” P.29JamyWhitaker-GetReal

Insecurities answers the questions “Why do we wear masks?” and “Where do we wear them?”  Not surprisingly, she explains how they appear in our relationships at church, work, with friends and family, and even with God.  This 2nd part is what resonated most with me.  Reminding me that “God does not call the equipped, He equips the called” (p.62), and then challenging us to search ourselves to discover what we are most afraid of, she finally exhorts us systematically to “let it go…”, “get out of the box…” take the first step…” and “get up and get going”.  Then when we find ourselves being stretch beyond what we’re comfortable with – as we inevitably will – we must not question the plan, but rather dig deeper with the Lord.  A faith-strengthening approach, to say the least!

Finally, Perspective helps us move ahead with all this new-found knowledge.  Ms Whitaker would have us turn our focus to an eternal perspective, learning how to identify and minimize the distractions in our lives that cause us to take our eyes off the prize and discourage us from bringing our best to the game. Focusing on our circumstances and the “messes” in our lives makes us lose sight of God and His plan and purpose for us, losing an eternal perspective.  This perspective will always put us in situations where we will be challenged by something new. Being real, realizing who we are in Jesus, and stripping away the masks hiding the potential in each one of us will allow us to move ahead in victory.

“It is so easy to stand still or go back to what is familiar.  However, we will never get to our “promised land” if we do not take that step of faith.  God has big things in store for each one of us.  However, those blessings will not be realized if we never get moving to our “promised land”. (p.95)

While searching for free family-friendly activities to do this summer, I recently came across Geocaching.  While not really new (the history tab on the geocaching website says it began waaaaaaay back in 2000!), I had never really checked it out before.  So, having a whole season of summer ahead of us, it was an overcast Thursday afternoon when we donned our treasure-hunting outfits and attitudes and set out to explore.

Conservative back-lash can lead to dire consequences

(Generally as a matter of preference, I stay away from commenting on controversial issues.  This one, however, hits close to home, and I felt compelled to voice my opinion. I realize I may step on some toes here, but so be it.  I would be very interested in hearing your own civilly-expressed viewpoints in the comments below!)boy-scouts

A recent decision by the Boy Scouts of America to allow openly-homosexual boys into the organization has led to an extreme back-lash by conservative groups. Among other actions, it has led to threats to form splinter (more conservative) groups, and led American Heritage Girls (a Christian-based alternative to Girl Scouts) to break ties with the Boy Scouts of America.

All I can say is: score another one for the liberals.

How disappointing.
